The Grin
A delicious girl I like a lot just posted something about Garbage, which brings me to the subject of producers given that Garbage is a band of producers. So what exactly is a producer ?
Well, first you have to come back on Earth : you don’t really believe that Madonna, Britney Spears, Rihanna or any of those artists really write their music do you ? Of course not… then who does it ?
Well, if you look closely to the Wikipedia entry of Britney Spears song 3 you will notice it says it is produced by Max Martin. Then searching a bit on Google you will find a production company called Maratone where you can check Max Martin’s discography which includes Pink (Please don’t leave me, So what), Ke$ha, Katy Perry (Hot n Cold), Britney Spears (3, Baby one more time, Oops I did it again), Avril Lavigne and so on.
And if you look closely, you notice they own music instruments, computers and recording studios… yes, they wrote all those songs. Most ‘artists’ are mere interpreters, in the best case they modify some lyrics.
Here is what Wikipedia says

A music producer can, in some cases, be compared to a film director, with noted practitioner Phil Ek himself describing his role as “the person who creatively guides or directs the process of making a record, like a director would a movie. The engineer would be more the cameraman of the movie.”[1] The music producer’s job is to create, shape, and mold a piece of music. The scope of responsibility may be one or two songs or an artist’s entire album – in which case the producer will typically develop an overall vision for the album and how the various songs may interrelate […]
In most cases the music producer is also a competent arranger, composer, musician or songwriter who can bring fresh ideas to a project. As well as making any songwriting and arrangement adjustments, the producer is also in charge of the creative mix. He or she will liaise with the sound engineer who concentrates on the technical aspects of recording, whereas the music producer keeps an eye on the overall project’s marketability.

In the same way you go to the movies watch a Woody Allen or a Brian de Palma movie (and not a Scarlett Johansson movie no matter how good of an actress she is), you should be listening to a Max Martin or a Butch Vig song.
Why aren’t music producers the “stars” in the same way the movie directors are ? mmm… Paparazzis, family life, not having dance in underwear and the fact most of them are over 45 years old probably is the answer to the question. Yet…

Here is a simplification of Kimokino’s picture to better see the color contrasts and main chromatic ensembles. Notice how the greens and the blues form a cross with the face of the subject in its center.

This time the three compositions are quite similar so it is less about the position of the subject than the contrast between the different components of the picture.
There is a nice saturation contrast between the blue of the dress and the blue of the sky. There is also color contrast with the different tones of green in the background. Finally I do like the stripes motif created by the-thing-I-don’t-know-how-to-name-in-English (or any other language actually) and its shadow.

Which one is better and why ? Pictures from Distorted vision but I don’t know how to reblog 3 pictures in a single entry therefore I saved and reposted them.

Audrey Hepburn crying in Breakfast at Tiffany.
Deep Blue Something made in 1995 a song in which the singer and his girlfriend are breaking-up as she argues they have nothing in common and the singer answers the movie “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” is one thing they got.
The song features a mix of traditional and electric guitars, nice solos and a typical “wall of sound” background.
Fun fact from Wikipedia : Todd Pipes [lead singer] was fired from his job as an English teacher at the private Christian School after parents have complained that their children were being taught by a rock musician… ha ha ha !
Toby and Todd Pipes became producers which doesn’t come as a surprise. I will explain in some post what exactly is the role of a producer in contemporary music.

Yumi from Code Lyoko is not very happy.
Code Lyoko’s theme is a perfect example of ostinato in contemporary music. I am actually agreeably surprised to see how computers enable (re)creating music in a very simple way today. The music video that is linked here was done by a fan on FL-Studio.

Hannah Hart in Drunk Kitchen.
I told her in Paris we just loved her classical American cooking and how she always pairs that with excellent wines.
cookies
ice cream
pizza
apple pie
mac & cheese
In her own words, “In the beginning of the video, I’m sober and in the end, I’m drunk. Maybe if I’m lucky, I’ve cooked something too.”

Who invented repetitive music ?
You might believe repetitive music is as old as the earth given the amount of repetitive music you can hear nowadays. Well, it is an invention of the middle of the XXe century, with figures like Steve Reich and Philip Glass (and some early precursors). Ostinato has been in usage for a very long time but never to the level it reached during the XXe.
Among Steve Reich’s compositions the most popular is probably City Life that uses noises of New York (and a small symphonic ensemble). It is divided into 5 movements
Check it out
Pile / driver alarm
It’s been a honeymoon
Heartbeats / boats and buoys
Heavy smoke
The last section contains samples from New York emergency teams during the 1993 bombing of World Trade Center.
The video of New York done by Jérôme Bosc to go with the music is simply fantastic.

The Beach Boys in Good Vibrations also use a very noticeable falsetto.
Good vibrations is remarkable at many levels but in particular for the instruments it uses, among other things organs, a predecessor of the Martenot Wave (picture) and different variants of pianos.
Martenot waves (ondes Martenot in French) were actually a very popular instrument in the XXe century both in classical music and popular music, including Gorillaz, Radiohead, Muse, Depeche Mode or the Beach Boys.

Tye Zamora from Alien Ant Farm in Smooth Criminal
Alien Ant Farm released a reorchestration of Michael Jackson’s Smooth Criminal. In it Tye Zamora sings in falsetto, the high pitch sounds used as a counterpoint of the main melody. That is what makes actually all the savor of Alien Ant Farm reorchestration due to the contrast with “wall of sound” of lower pitched electric guitars. I just regret they didn’t keep the trumpet from Michael Jackson’s original. By the way, the original features women singing the melodic counterpoints outside form a couple of screams by Jackson itself as well as women using their vocal fry (low glottal sounds).
The very distinctive timbre (tone color) of the falsetto makes it sound very different than a woman singing in its normal (modal) voice as the comparison between Jackson and AAF shows it. Actually falsetto has been extremely popular in rock music during all the XXe century being used among other by Led Zepplin, Aerosmith, Queen, The Beatles, The Who, U2, Muse, The Beach Boys and many more…
Well… the music video is awfully bad, however I recommend listening to climax around minute 2:20 and compare it with Jackson’s around minute 9:15
